The main port for foreign trade in Finland – One of the busiest passenger ports in Europe

Helsinki is one of the busiest passenger ports in Europe, and the Port of Helsinki Ltd creates a seamless framework for sea traffic to destinations such as Tallinn and Stockholm. In 2019, a total of 12.2 million and in COVID-19 year of 2020, 4,8 million passengers travelled through the Port of Helsinki.

The Port of Helsinki is also Finland’s leading general port for foreign trade. In 2020, the Ports’s total cargo traffic was 11,1 million tonnes. The main export commodities are products for the forest industry, machinery and equipment, whereas in imports the most prominent product group are daily consumer goods.

West Harbour successfully opens its new gate area for heavy traffic. At the same time, the heavy traffic approach route moves onto Tyynenmerenkatu and the last truck buffer areas are decommissioned and replaced with plans for residential construction. Read more

The Port enters into an agreement for the long-term lease of a new multi-storey carpark to be completed at West Harbour in early 2021. The Satamaparkki carpark will serve ship passengers, visitors and residents of the area.

The Port of Helsinki makes a donation to the University of Helsinki Baltic Sea Fund – a total of EUR 135,000 over three years. The university will use it to research opportunities related to offshore wind energy.

Vuosaari Harbour Today is launched. The new online service offers drivers the chance to find out the real-time situational status of the main harbour of Finnish foreign trade with just one glance.

COVID-19 is suddenly spreading into a global pandemic, and strict travel restrictions and internal border controls within the Schengen area are also introduced in Finland. Passenger traffic comes to an almost complete halt.

The Port of Helsinki begins the construction of a new onshore power supply connection at Olympia Terminal, which allows for the reduction of a ship’s climate emissions during its stay at the port. Unfortunately, COVID-19 causes the introduction of the system to be postponed to 2021.
